Obituary

Richard L. Smith Sr., age 85, of Madisonville, went to his heavenly home in the loving arms of Jesus on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

He is procced in death by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Smith; his parents, Wilson Smith, and Martha and Albert Haury; brother, Jim Smith; granddaughter, Christina Capastany; great-granddaughter, Kenzo Kerekes.

Anyone who knew Richard knew him as Smitty and are familiar with his two favorite saying: “Damn it Sue” and “I’ll put my boot up your a$$”. He would help anyone, but if you took advantage of him, he was done with you. He loved going for drives in the mountains and looking at the scenery with his son Rick. When he was younger and able he loved to go out dancing, bowling and riding his motorcycle. He enjoyed going on trips with Rick and Lucy. He loved spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids. He had a deep passion for running heavy machinery and tractors. He retired from the local 18 in Ohio many years ago.

He is survived by his three children, Richard and (Sandra) Smith, Brenda (Elvin) Capestany, Loretta Smith, and Willis (Joey)Marsh who was like a son; brother, Gary Smith; grandchildren, Rick Smith, Cassandra (Kellen) Kerekes, Gia (Thomas) Sosa, Harley Howser, Tori Greg) Plemons; 13 great-grandchildren, Keona Smith, Waylon Smith, Wynnlon Smith, Whitley Smith, Kellen Kerekes, Dixie Kerekes, Callie Kerekes, Elijah Sosa, Alyana Sosa, Blayden, Hunter, Gunner and Tokoma Plemons; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
