Roy Mason, age 84, of Tellico Plains, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.
Born on March 22, 1937 in Sparta, Georgia, he was the oldest child of Cecil and Frankie Mason who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his in-laws, Emmitt and Grace Hunt; his sisters and sister-in-laws, Carolyn McElhaney, Emma Wattenbarger, Patty Mason and Sandy Mason; his great grandson, Titus Debity; and his niece, Tina Davis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Lodema Mason; his daughters, Sheila Ervin (Darrell) and Teresa Choate (Tim); his grandchildren, Sheryl Debity (Trent), Kevin Ervin (Jessica), Brandon Choate (Amellia), Bryant Choate (Marissa), Brent Choate, and Bryce Choate; his great-grandchildren, Tayla Davis, Trevin Davis, Micah Choate, Brianna Choate, Reece Ervin, Madalyn Choate, Brailyn Choate, Ramsey Ervin, Tensley Debity, Tyson Debity, Tyra Debity, and Miles Choate; and his siblings, Phyllis Armstrong (E.M.), Virgil Mason, Jackie Mason (Brenda), J.C. Mason (Jeanie), and Joe Mason.
Roy was loved by so many for his compassion, generosity, and sense of humor. He was affectionately called “Papaw” by most who knew him. As a gifted craftsman, he loved woodworking and carpentry. He used his passions to help several people in his community and built a reputation as a reliable handyman. With countless talents, he could handle any plumbing, electrical, and carpentry needs. He was well-known around Monroe County as a man who could fix or build whatever was needed.
When he wasn’t building something or fixing problems, you could find him fishing with his family on the pontoon boat or at a local pond. His heart was filled with joy when he watched his grandchildren and taught them how to catch a fish. He served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.
He was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, where he served as a deacon for many years, having been ordained as a deacon in 1968 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Montgomery, Illinois. He also enjoyed passing on his wisdom to the next generation while teaching the youth.
A special thanks is extended to the nurses and staff at Starr Regional who provided “Papaw” with excellent care during his stay there.
