Sandra Kay Akins

March 28, 1955 — November 7, 2020

Sandra Kay Oody Akins, age 63, of Tellico Plains went to her home in Heaven Saturday, November 7, 2020. She passed peacefully at her home while surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Loudon, TN she began her career early in life as a surgical nurse. Even though later in life she worked in the plastic industry but the nurse in her never went away. Anyone with any kind of injury always went to Ms. Sandy. She was a loving and caring person that would sit many hours with the sick bringing them comfort in their final days. In her last 8 years of life, she was proud to be the Director of Keep Monroe County Beautiful. Sandy organized many re-cycling events in the county but most loved going into the schools educating the children about litter and coordinated magic shows for the kids. They got so excited when they heard Ms. Sandy was coming. She loved the mountains, camping, fishing and the Tennessee Volunteers (which she had no choice). If you were blessed to have known Sandy, then you knew how much she loved and cared for you.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl D. and Violet Franks Oody; sister, Vickie Oody Martin and baby brother, Mikey Oody.

She leaves behind her husband of 25 years, Darrell Akins; son, Robert Shawn Thomas; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Billy Jean Oody; granddaughter, Racquella (Kruz) Murphy; great grandchildren, Cam and Axel Murphy; mother-in-law who was really her mother, Lodema “Noon” Akins; brother-in-law, Frank Martin; special aunt, Sandra Franks and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 12 at Myers Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. in Myers Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Teague officiating.
